My baby turns 6!!

My baby turns 6, today!! A day of celebration!! Having a boy after 3 girls has truly been an adventure, and a very humbling experience for this mom who, with 3 children under her belt, felt experienced and confident and thought she was prepared for anything... Today, I am grateful for my little sunshine, for this bundle of energy, who keeps me on my toes and never bored, who makes us all laugh, who makes us pull our hair out, who keeps us wondering how in the heck do genetics work...

Today is a day for good thoughts!! So, for today, I will try to forget how truly painful it was to deliver a 10 lbs 2 oz baby "au naturel", with no pain medication....

... For today, I will repress the memories of that time when he decided to give my carpet a shampoo treatment or when he took it upon himself to add that certain "zing" to his bedroom...

... or when his scientific endeavors caused a clogged toilet and a subsequent flood downstairs, which forced my husband to remove the toilet and crawl under the house to remove an airplane stuck in the pipes...

... or the day when he turned the water on in the laundry room's sink (upstairs) just before we left the house for two hours...

... or the time when the neighbor came to warn us that he was dancing on top of my car butt naked... No big surprise, since Alex spent half of his toddler years butt naked (inside of the house and out)...

... For today, I will try not to think of that day, when he was three, and he actually drove my car, backing it onto the porch at the local antique mall!! Still to this day I can't figure out how he managed to take the car key away from me, get in the driver's seat, turn the key on and back the car onto the covered porch... All of this in just about one minute!!

... Of course we just about forgot all those trips to the emergency room...

Yes, today is my son's birthday!! And I am no longer thinking about this morning, when we revealed to him his grand present, a brand new bicycle, waiting for the squeals of delight, only to be met with an empty glare and a "it's too big for me!", as he turned his back and walked away...

Today I am trying to laugh at all those things that have made me cry, scream, run.... What a true joy it is to have this little boy in my life!!! Never a dull moment, never short of stories to tell the grandparents, never missed photo ops...!!

Yes, today my baby turns 6... Measured in white hairs, it is the equivalent of 60!!! But, what a trip it has been!! I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world! I love you, Alex, will you stay my baby forever??!!

  1. After living next door to you for 5 years, I can say EVERY one of these stories are true. Especially the naked ones. We love this guy and miss him so much. He really has grown so fast. Thank goodness he has not lost what makes him distinctly Alex. Tell him Happy Birthday from us. I laughed until I had tears. We love you guys!

  2. What a cutie and what an experience for you! At 10 lbs, I guess you knew he would be a handful!! Love him, hold him, and cherish him. Pretty soon he will be 26 or 36 or 46, and you will wonder where the years went. Have a great weekend. Sally

  3. Oh my gosh! I am laughing so hard, C.D got out of bed to see what was going on. Boys are wonderful aren't they? And just think. You gave him a bicycle. Just wait! He is an absolute hoot and what a ham! I mean that in the cutest way. His personality leaps out of the photos. Happy Birthday Alex. Debbie

  4. Hysterical! :) I have 3 boys and a girl...so, I know totally where you are coming from (except x3). I was so excited to have had a girl and was pretty glad after 3 boys that I had only one (especially when she hit her teens). They are now all grown except our baby (who is 15 now). I had to laugh through this whole blog....thanks for bringing back my memories of my little men!

Thanks for posting on my blog today about my dear friend Robin (Magnolia Pearl). And you are right...I think it may be that one needs to ask a question at the end...same thing my Texan hubby said!

    Have a great weekend! xo...deb

  9. I'm not laughing AT you I'm laughing WITH you! I have 3 of them...the first one much like Alex. He could unlock every dead bolt in the house when he as 18 mos.and I had #2 in my lap at that time. You've made me think of a million stories, but I will refrain from typing them LOL. I would get the same reaction from a bike unfortunately. What happened to the days where boys worked little jobs and saved forever for that big day when they got to bring that bike home?

  10. I loved this post Isabel, primarily because I know Alex and have known him his whole life. You forgot to mention the time he sat in a box of packing peanuts naked and came out with a surprise. That one still makes me laugh. That kid sure has personality! Happy Birthday Alex!

  11. Beginning at the age of 5, my son enjoyed taking apart everything -- the phone, the remote, radios, even the TV once. It got better when he learned how to put it all back again. LOL.

Take heart. They (whomever, they are) say that boys are harder as children and easier as teens -- girls vice versa. I can't say for sure because I only had the one son.

  14. Crack me up! O have all girls, but grew up with brothers. My favorite picture is in the rattan/wocker vase. Sooo funny. I always get a kick out of what kids play withy- can you imagine if you had given him that or the paper towls and said- here- play with this- the looks you would have gotten? Maybe similar to Dad's face in the toilet picture! Once my brother flushed an orange. It was funny- for about 30 seconds. And 5 minutes before when we plotted.

O think God makes them small and cute so you fall in love with them, just big enough you can't put them back ( especially this one. 10 pounds!) so by the time they start ruining your stuff, you can't get rid of them :) Just like puppies!

  17. you just enlightened me. your alex is my arek. i love it. my arek at age 5 backed my car down a hill into a brand new truck and almost hit a porta potty and 2 gate guards in germany. my arek also drew his name in sharpie marker all over his room on EVERYTHING when he was 3. my arek would play in packing peanuts and rip all of them up until they covered the entire backyard like snow. my arek still runs naked thru the yard and he is almost 9. i thought arek was the only on that did such things. your alex reminds me of my arek. tell alex happy birthday....i think he is an aquarius...must be the dawning because arex is an aquarius too. alex is so adorable. i wish i could put him on a trampoline with arek and let them work out all that energy. happy birthday alex....
